Farm to Table

Saturday mornings in Berkeley are meant to be spent at the Berkeley Farmer’s Market and that is pretty much how Kevin and I roll every Saturday.  One of our favorite vendors is Scott Brennan of The Fifth Quarter Charcuterie.  Ever since Scott joined the Market earlier this year, he has supplied us with many, many wonderful treats.  Toulouse Sausage.  Pork Pate with Mission Figs.  Duck Crepinettes.  Foie Gras Torchon (RIP, tear*).  The amazing list goes on….

For my final photography project I wanted to document Scott working in his kitchen and it was just my luck that he was about to receive a whole sheep fresh from the farm.  I spent a delightful evening with him and his assistant, Taylor, as they prepared sausages, pates, and beautiful cuts of lamb.  I learned so much and it has definitely been a highlight of my summer.  Oh, and I got a few great pictures too!

If you find yourself at the Market on a Saturday morning, head on down to Center & MLK and visit Scott!  He is amazing!

Portrait of a Place – Point Isabel

My favorite place in Berkeley is the dog park at Point Isabel.  It has amazing views of the Bay, sunshine (most of the time), and lots and lots of really happy dogs!  Whenever I need to get away or laugh, I go here.  It’s a pretty awesome place!

On this particular day, I wanted to document the character of the park, as well as, the human/dog interaction.  It was interesting – some people were out there to enjoy the day with their pet and meet up with other dog walkers, while others seemed preoccupied with daily distractions.  I found it both exciting and challenging to photograph the dogs – they were fun subjects, but boy do they move quickly!  🙂

Bittersweet Farewell

Probably true for most, lunch time is the one time during the work day that I look forward to with eager anticipation.  It’s not only because I love to eat, but because I get to spent lunch with two of my best work buddies, Young and Kirk.  The three of us have bonded over discussions of amazing restaurants, world travels, funny TV shows, and – even on occasion – spoiled each other with gourmet desserts!

Last week was Young’s final week in the office, as she is preparing to begin graduate school in the fall.  To celebrate, we decided to share our final lunch at Cafe Rouge.  It was a blast – we overindulged on amazing food, Young gave oysters another try, and we laughed about random things.

It’s been a great four years!  We’re really going to miss you, Young!  Best of luck!

My Three All-Time Favorite Portrait Photographs

My first assignment in my Documentary Photography class is to pick three of my all-time favorite portrait images.  I only started photographing in black and white a few months ago, so my collection of photos is relatively small and my collection of portrait images is even smaller!  Nonetheless, the following photos really jumped out at me with a quickness.

Photo #1

My husband is one of my favorite people in the entire world and has become my muse since beginning photography.  I absolutely love photographing him and this one with his guitar is one of my all-time favorites.  This picture gives me a feeling of both peace and loneliness.

Photo #2

This photo just makes me smile from ear to ear.  Not only does it remind me of this wonderfully funny moment, but it also captures the fun characters of my two good friends so well!

Photo #3

I captured this quiet moment while at a friend’s birthday party on a train.  I really love the body language of the subjects, the texture out the window, and the light shining in on the train wall.

Greetings!

Welcome to my first photography blog!  With this blog, I hope to share with you my view of the world through black and white photography.  Enjoy!
